I could swear I posted a Happy Turkey Day message here yesterday, but now it's gone. Perhaps I screwed up the word verification and didn't notice. Anyhow, hope you had a happy Turkey Day, and break a drumstick with that big production!

If you've been earching the musty, dusty vinyl bins of your local thrift stores, Salvation Armies, and Goodwills, you've probably come across dozens, maybe hundreds of what I call "local choir" albums. "Local choir" albums are plentiful and usually the same. A local choir from a high school, community college, or small university dress in their formal robes, assemble on stage surrounded by microphones from a local or national recording service, they sing the same 12 or 13 songs, and it's captured on tape. The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson Celebrates Christmas DVD

This was a Christmas present given to me by my son Alex. In the past, Alex chose several Christmas albums ( Oh Santa (Yep Roc) , Gene Autry ) to give to my on December 25th but instead chose a DVD on my Santa list. My Santa list contained several DVD titles and several that I asked for were under the Christmas tree. I'm attempting to lose weight as a New Year's resolution (40 lbs. by my 40th birthday in June) and these will be used while exercising on the stationary bike or treadmill. Back in September, I discovered this DVD would be hitting shelves in October. At first, I was pretty psyched. A full DVD full of vintage Christmas clips from the Mighty Carson Art Players and Johnny himself, I thought. Last December, I posted a YouTube video that had a clip from his 15th Anniversary show that contained a pretty hilarious Christmas clip. O Tannenbaum - Christmas On The Rhine (Decca Records)

On the surface, this may seem to be an ordinary German Christmas album. If you look and listen a little deeper, you just might find some surprises.  There are abundant copies of this album anywhere you look. eBay probably has a few copies listed for auction as you read this. But... some album covers have some suspicious red writing directly under the words "Christmas on the Rhine". These words read: "Mixed Chorus and Orchestra under direction of Werner Müller " That explains why this album is a cut above the rest. When you heard the words "German Christmas record", visions of oompah bands and overbearing Teutonic singers straight out of a Wagner opera might have filled your head. Not this album. This is a well-orchestrated, well-arranged, and well sung album.
